The 2020 Patrick White Writing Competition is now open and will close for judging on October 31
Who is Patrick White?
Patrick White is Australia’s most accomplished writer and first to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Patrick was an avid supporter of the advancement of Indigenous Australian youth.
What the Awards Do
The Awards have been designed to encourage Indigenous Australian students from Kindy to Year 12 studying in NSW to use their reading, writing, and creative skills to submit a short story, poem or play.
Themes for 2020
Kindergarten to Year 12
- "Growing"
- "Looking Back"
- "It was so small.."
Group Competition - Years K-3
The Group section of the competition is offered to support Aboriginal students working together with their classmates to develop a shared story, poem or play.
In the early years of schooling, group work is encouraged and the AEC would like to support this learning approach.
As long a one member of the class identifies as Aboriginal the work will be accepted. The prizes are awarded on a class by class basis for each of the years Kindy to Year 3. Schools are free to enter as many stories, poems or plays as they like for each class.

Entries close on October 31 this year .
These awards are open to all Indigenous Australian students in NSW from Kindergarten through to Year 12.
Prizes for 2020
A Major Prize and up to 2 Encouragement awards will be given for a short story, and for a play or poem, for each year Kindergarten to Year 12, and for the Group Competition
