Camden Show award MAHS students work!
Three students elected to enter the show in the Arts and Crafts Section, in the Youth Section for those under 21, for an Article of Woodwork. The work of students from Year 11 students - Cody D, Kayla L, and Ethan O. Entries were open to anyone submitting Woodwork across the Macarthur region, and in the section for anyone 21, Kayla was awarded 'Second Place', and Ethan's cutting board was awarded 'Highly Commended'.
They were making a cutting board from an assortment of timber species. All of the timbers they used came through recycling old cupboards, pallets or decking brought in for them to take apart, which gave them the chance to learn about using Australian Coachwood, Brushbox, and Jarrah, as well as some English Oak, Merbau, Pacific Maple, Walnut and Pine. This Project Based Learning also helped them learn to use the thicknesser, bandsaw, and plunge router, as well as finished their work using hand tools like planes, and hand scrapers. Students also learnt to apply an oil finish scented with the oil from orange peels as this has a lovely fragrance and is suitable for 'food grade' functional uses.
